Inhibition of experimental hypercholesterolemia and atherogenesis by 4-amino pteroylglutamic acid (aminopterin)

Inhibition of experimental hypercholesterolemia and atherogenesis by 4-amino pteroylglutamic acid (aminopterin)

Circulation Research 8: 759-764

Rabbits were given subcutaneous injections of aminopterin for 4 weeks and then for 8 weeks an atherogenic diet, namely, stock diet with 3 to 4% added cholesterol, during which treatment with aminopterin continued. With restricted amounts of aminopterin the animals made good weight gains, comparable with those of control rabbits given the atherogenic diet but not aminopterin. The control rabbits were found to have grossly demonstrable atheromatosis of the aorta.
