Inhibition of incorporation of S35-labeled amino acids into tissue and serum proteins by beta-3-thienyl-DL-alanine

The incorporation of S35-labeled amino acids into serum and tissue proteins of the beta-3-thienyl-alanine-treated rat was compared with that in control rats. Labeled amino acid uptake was suppressed in all of the proteins analyzed, with statistically significant differences in degree. The intestinal protein showed the least suppression, and serum gamma globulin and albumin were less affected than the serum beta and alpha globulins. A possible explanation was that some, but not all, tissues have access to an outside source of unsubstituted phenylalanine. Other, explanations are also considered.
