Inhibition of nitrogen fixation in non-legume root nodules by hydrogen and carbon monoxide

The effect of the presence of H and of CO on the fixation of N in detached root nodules of non-legumes was studied, fixation being measured by the use of N15. Parallel tests on legume nodules (pea and soybean) are included. Fixation in the nodules of Casuarina, Alnus, and Myrica is inhibited in the presence of substantial proportions of H, to a degree resembling that shown in legumes'. Fixation in these non-legumes is arrested in the presence of small proportions of CO, and here again the sensitiveness is of the same order as in legumes. Attention is drawn to the suitability of non-legume nodules to studies of this type.
