Inhibition of nucleic acid synthesis by chloramphenicol in synchronized cultures of Escherichia coli

Inhibition of nucleic acid synthesis by chloramphenicol in synchronized cultures of Escherichia coli

Journal of Bacteriology 79: 122-124

Following synchronization of cellular division in E. coli by cold treatment techniques, addition of chloramphenicol during a short period of time upon incubation of the culture at 37[degree]C Mocks nucleic acid synthesis. With subsequent incubation chloramphenicol addition has little effect on nucleic acid synthesis until the first cellular division. Chloramphenicol blocks deoxyribonucleic acid synthesis when added just prior to cellular division whereas the addition of chloramphenicol during a short period of time subsequent to cellular division blocks ribonucleic acid synthesis. It is suggested that the appearance of new proteins at specific times related to cellular division are requisite to subsequent nucleic acid synthesis.
