Inhibitors of photosynthesis as herbicides

Substances regulating cell elongation arebeing used very effectively to kill unwanted plants presumably by upsetting their normal growth patterns and a remarkable interest in the mechanism of growth regulation has arisen out of the commercial success of herbicides like 2,4-D. The current state of knowledge of photosynthesis is briefly outlined and attempts are made to explain the mode of action of the newer herbicides in terms of this knowledge. Inhibitors of photosynthesis are discussed with respect to the nature of the inhibition reaction, inteference with O production, site of inhibition, and sensible use of such inhibitors. The author envisages the great possibility of modifying the vegetation of grazing lands by the use of new and more refined herbicides.
