Inhibitors of polar auxin transport

Physiol Plantarum 10(1): 29-38

The effects of various chemicals on polar auxin transport and respiration rates of sunflower stem sections were compared by standard transport, bio-assay and manometric methods. Dinitrophenol inhibited auxin transport almost completely at concentrations which stimulated respiration (10-4 [image]). Sulfhydryl-inactivating compounds (iodoacetate, p-chloro-mercuribenzoic acid, phenyl mercuric chloride, n-ethylmaleimide and triiodobenzoic acid) strongly inhibited auxin transport at concentrations which did not inhibit respiration (10-5 [image] to 10-3 [image]). When respiration was inhibited by KCN, DNP, or the sulfhydryl-inactivating compounds, auxin transport was also inhibited. The conclusion is drawn that polar auxin transport is inhibited by treatments which inhibit respiratory processes, and it may also be more specifically inhibited by various sulfhydryl-inactivating compounds.
