Insect sex attractants. I. The isolation, identification, and synthesis of the sex attractant of the gypsy moth

Insect sex attractants. I. The isolation, identification, and synthesis of the sex attractant of the gypsy moth

J. Amer. chem. Soc, Easton, Pa, 83: 4819-4824

The following is virtually the authors' summary. The extremely potent sex attractant secreted by the females of Lymantria (Porthetria) dispar (L.) to lure the males has been isolated in pure form and characterized as dextrorotatory 10-aeetoxy-cis-7-hexadecen-l-ol. A second component, as yet unidentified, has also been isolated and shows attraction of a lower order.
