Inter-culture and weeding in relation to the quantitative losses by weeds in rainfed cotton (Gossypium arboreum)

Virnar cotton was grown with and without f.y.m. over 2 yr and was intercultivated and/or weeded. The yield of seed cotton (both number of bolls per plant and weight of seed cotton per boll) was significantly increased by weeding, alone or with intercultivation. Intercultivation tended to give higher yields than the control but the difference was not always significant; it did not conserve soil moisture. The total weight of cotton plants plus weeds was decreased by competition.
