Samples were collected at intervals over a year from 3 pairs of plots, each pair carrying, at the beginning of the experiment, a pure stand of one species. The pairs of plots were grazed alternately for 2 weeks by sheep. In 2 cases the stands remained pure; the pair with Chloris gayana were invaded by a " couch " grass, Digitaria scalarum, about halfway through the period.
