According to the " adaptation theory " here postulated, adaptation to a new environment involves a readjustment of the metabolic processes of the cell. The phenotypic response is temporary and non-heritable unless the environmental pressure is maintained for a number of generations, in which case the constant association of a particular chain of metabolic events leads sooner or later to the attachment of the essential molecule or molecules to a protein molecule.
