Removing the litter and herbaceous vegetation for 40 months from oak-ash forest on dark gray soil decreased the C content of the top 40 cm of soil by 36.8 tons/ha and the N content by 3.74 tons/ha compared with uncleared soil. For oak forest on residual podzolized solodized solonets the corresponding reductions were 14.6 tons for C and 1.55 tons for N.
