Infection by the virulent, or progressive, V. alboatrum str. can occur without symptoms in both wilt-sensitive and wilt-tolerant hop vars. The harvesting of such symptomless infected plants for machine-picking involves its transport and accumulation in large quantities. The high infectivity of this waste was demonstrated by placing 4 oz. lots beneath newly planted setts of Fuggle N on land hitherto free from V. infection.
