Mature asparagus plantings need less fertiliser than is often thought

Mature asparagus plantings need less fertiliser than is often thought

Comm. Gr, 3404, 767-9

The quantity of labelled P recovered from harvested asparagus spears was less than 3 % of that applied in the fertilizer. On 40 farms, using a wide range of NPK applications, neither the yield nor the mineral composition of the spears was related to the rates of fertilizer application. An asparagus plantation yielding 55 cwt. of spears per acre is calculated to use 23 Ib. of K2O per acre.
