Meiosis in an F1 hybrid between a Turkish wild beet (Beta vulgaris ssp. maritima) and Beta procumbens

Meiosis in an F1 hybrid between a Turkish wild beet (Beta vulgaris ssp. maritima) and Beta procumbens

J. Amer. Soc. Sug. Beet Tech 11: 49-67

A detailed study of meiosis in the hybrid of Turkish wild beet x B. procumbens indicated that the moderate fertility of this hybrid is due to the formation of restitution nuclei. The study revealed a new way whereby such restitution nuclei may be formed, namely by the regular division in an asynaptic pollen mother cell of all the univalents during the first meiotic division.
