Mutation research on crop plants in Argentina

Mutation research on crop plants in Argentina

Eucarpia. Second Congress of the European Association for Research on Plant Breeding, Ko, Germany, 76-77

Work begun in 1949 at the Instituto de Fitotecnia, Castelar, is reviewed, the results of the following lines of investigation being summarized: (1) the divergent mutagenic effects of formaldehyde and urethane upon barley; (2) decreasing the chromosome-breakage effect of ionizing radiations without changing the mutation rate, by protective chemical action; (3) modification of mutagenesis by treatments of several and consecutive generations with ionizing radiations; (4) induction of barley mutants resistant to mildew byray, fast neutron and formaldehyde treatments; (5) induction of mutation for disease resistance in wheat, one mutant resistant to race 15B of stem rust having been obtained through gamma -ray exposure of Sinvalocho MA; and (6) irradiation of Chinese Spring monosomics. Several other projects initiated on oats, wheat, rye, sunflower, Cucurbita maxima and beans are listed.
