Nitrogen fertilizing of potatoes. 1. Effect of increasing rates on tuber and starch yields.

Tuber yields were increased by 49000 kg/ha (19%) as N application increased to 60 kg/ha. The effect of higher amounts of N depended largely on local conditions. High N applications only slightly decreased starch production. 60-80 kg/ha N was more effective in damp, cool weather or on light or medium soils than in warm dry weather or on more fertile soils. Farmyard manure improved the efficiency of low or moderate N applications.
