Material of Scirpus maritimus, Polygonum nodosum & Phragmites communis was mixed with heavy polder soil with or without 100 mg N (as KNO3) per kg dry soil; the mixtures were maintained out of doors or in a humid atmosphere at 29 degrees C. The higher temperature or addition of KNO3 lowered the C/N ratio, so hastening the liberation of mineral N from the plant material. Drying & grinding the material retarded mineralization.
