In a reddish brown loam formed on basaltic rock, P deficiency limited shoot but not root growth of indicator plants Romaine lettuce and the bitter-brush browse plants Purshia tridentata and P. glandulosa. Root growth was not significantly limited in this soil by N, K or S deficiencies. In a coarse-textured pumice soil, shoot and root growth of the indicator plants was limited by N deficiency. S deficiency appeared to limit the growth of P. tridentata.
