Nutritional value of date seeds for sheep

Jour Animal Sci 22(4): 894-897
Nutritional value of date seeds for sheep
The possibility of using date seeds for sheep feeding was explored by comparing their nutritive value and their effect on growth with those of other familiar byproducts. Date seeds have a higher T.D.N. value than oil-extracted rice bran and they contain a fairly high percent of oil with a high coefficient of digestibility. The addition of urea improved the T.D.N. together with the dry matter digestibility, depressed the digestibility of fat and crude fiber and had no effect on the nitrogen retention of ground date seeds. Feeding ram lambs on three mixtures indicated that the rate of growth and feed efficiency for date seeds urea cottonseed cake supplement was higher than for rice bran urea or rice bran cottonseed cake mixtures. It is concluded that date seeds combined with a good source of protein would make a nutritious diet for sheep.
