The probability of ultimate fixation of a gene in a popula-tion is treated as a continuous stochastic process and the solution is given as a function of the initial gene frequency (p) and the mean (M[delta]x) and variance (V[delta]x) of the gene frequency change ([delta]x) per generation. The formula is given by [image] The formula is shown to include previous results as special cases and is applied to solve problems where there is random fluctuation in selection intensity.
