Peculiarities of seed production in winter wheat grown at different altitudes in the Kabardino-Balkar ASSR.

The region comprises 3 natural zones, namely, (1) mountain (wet); (2) foot-hill (variable precipitation); and (3) steppe (dry). During 1950-52 observations were made at 200, 524, and 1200 on the Novoukrainka 83 var. of winter wheat, sown in autumn, 1949, at each of the 3 altitudes. The data show that, in regard to greater plant weight, increased weight of 1000 grains, less spoilt grain and improved germination capacity, steppe conditions are preferable.
