Recognition of ryegrass species and strains in the seedling stage

Recognition of ryegrass species and strains in the seedling stage

Empire Jour Exptl Agric 24(93): 27-36

By growing seedlings of Lolium spp. and strains under standard conditions and comparing growth characters up to 5th leaf, the classification and identification of these in the seedling stage conforms with that worked out for the adult stage. A key is provided for such identification. Detailed measurements are not needed for six spp ./strains and are not essential for the others. There is no morphological difference between L. temulentum and L. arvense and between L. italicum and L. westerwoldicum: strains of L. perenne can be distinguished from each other and collectively from other species.
