Recommendations for control of nematodes infecting ornamental foliage plants in Florida

The chemical Zinophos (O, O-diethyl O-2 Pyrazinyl phosphorothioate) and Bayer 25141 (O, O-diethyl O-P-(Metasulfinyl) phenyl phosphorothioate) were thoroughly tested for nematode control on ornamental plants. When applied as drenches to plants growing in raised benches, Zinophos at 32 lb./acre and Bayer 25141 at 174 lb./acre gave complete control of Radopholus similis. These and lower rates of the 2 chemicals gave excellent control of R. similis, Pratylenchus coffeae, and Meloidogyne incognita when applied as drenches to ground beds. Selections of both materials were also used to control the above parasites by dipping the bare root of ornamental plants for an exposure period of 30 minutes. Eradication of the parasites was usually obtained at concentrations of 400-800 ppm. The materials used at the above rates and on a wide variety of plants proved nonphytotoxic.
