Red pimento, a therapeutic agent, too much neglected, against anorexia, liver congestion and vascular disturbances (haemorrhoids and varices)

Red pimento, a therapeutic agent, too much neglected, against anorexia, liver congestion and vascular disturbances (haemorrhoids and varices)

Bull. Soc. Paihol. exot 49: 841-843

Haemorrhoids and varices are rare in negroes in Africa and the Antilles who regularly eat red peppers, Capsicum annuum, or, in Cayenne, G. frutescens. Negro soldiers going on military service to France always take supplies with them. Several cases are mentioned in which haemorrhoids were relieved rapidly when red peppers were eaten. The fruit of C. annuum contains 2 alkaloids and a glucoside, to which its efficacy is attributed, -E.
