The infection, reaching considerable proportions in the coffee zone of Venecia, Anticquia, was caused by Nectria sp., but was complicated by symptoms of dieback induced by Colletotrichum coffeanum, which grows best at 22 degrees C. and rapidly penetrates the fruits. The N. sp., a saprophyte on decomposing vegetable matter, acted as a wound parasite, invading the inner bark via injuries made by tools or insects.
