Red stain of Acer negundo

Red stain of Acer negundo

Mycologia. 54: 1, 91-7

Fusarium reticulatum var. negundinis, causes red stain of the wood of A. negundo, and is reported for the 1st time from the state of Kansas. It was first isolated from the tunnels of the ambrosia beetle Xyleborus saxeseni but it does not function as an ambrosia fungus. It is believed to cause death to larvae of an unidentified 'cerambycid (Coleoptera) and adults of Augochlora pura of the Halictidae (Hymenoptera), both of which commonly infest boxelder in Kansas. Some isolates of the fungus studied by the authors form abundant scarlet colored crystals on the surface of the medium, giving a red coloration to the entire colony. These crystals are water soluble and appear to be of organic nature.
