Red-cell volume and total body water

Red-cell volume and total body water

British Journal of Haematology 8: 283-289

Measurement of the Cr51 red-cell volume in 23 hospital patients has shown a close correlation with total body water estimated by the urea space. The 95% confidence limits of the regression line of red-cell volume on total body water are + 110.7 ml. There is a much closer correlation of red-cell volume with total body water than with body weight or any other parameter previously reported. When related to total body water, there is no difference in red-cell volume between lean and obese or between male and female subjects. A method is described by which small changes in red-cell volume can be detected by simultaneous measurement of urea space and Cr51 red-cell volume.
