Redistribution of methionine and cystine during experimental wound healing

Chemical and radioactivity measurements have been performed on a number of tissues, including wound, kidney, and fractionated liver and blood plasma to detect alterations in the distribution of the sulfur-containing amino acids cystine and methionine after the infliction of experimental skin wounds. A depletion of body methionine and cystine containing proteins at the expense of regenerating wound proteins was noted. A stimulation of the rate of metabolism of the subject compounds in liver and kidney tissues is indicated, and reflected in studies of blood plasma protein and nonprotein fractions. A possible mechanism by which the body meets the demand for large amounts of cystine and methionine for wound protein formation is discussed.
