Reducing the surface checking of plywood exposed to weather

Reducing the surface checking of plywood exposed to weather

J. Inst. Wood Sci, 10, 66-73

Plywood bonded with phenolic resin withstands many years of exposure to weather without separation at the glue-lines, but its appearance is marred by checking, discoloration and roughening of the wood surface. This can be mitigated, but not eliminated, by the choice of species, and the onset can be delayed by paints, though their renewal at intervals is necessary.
