Reducing the toxicity of penicillin for guinea pigs

Groups of 5 guineapigs received intraperitoneal injections of 100, 000 I.U. penicillin G on 2 successive days. Then 10 or 100 mg. or 1 g. twice daily from the first day or 1 g. twice daily from the sixth day of sterilised cow rumen contents mixed with half the weight of potato flour was given by stomach tube; 2 groups received intraperitoneal injections of penicillinase 15 min. or 6 days after the penicillin. One group had penicillin only and one 0.5 g. potato flour twice daily.
