Reducing uptake of strontium-90 bv plants on contaminated Ohio soils

Thirteen samples representing four soil series were limed to pH 5-7. 10 mu c of carrier-free Sr80 were mixed into each subdivided sample, and the samples were cropped in sequence with maize, soyabeans, wheat and lucerne, and harvested at 6-10 inch height. Plant tops dried at 70 degrees were weighed and ground and a 200-mg sample was counted. Sr90 content decreased in the order: soyabean, maize, lucerne, wheat. At pH7, soil contaminated the crops half as much as ai pH5.
