Relation of bitter pit to mineral nutrition of apples. 1. Effects of calcium and nitrogen supplies on incidence of bitter pit.

Jonathan apple trees grown in sand culture were treated with 2 levels of N (400 and 80 p.p.m.) and each group included 3 levels of Ca supply (400 p.p.m., 80 p.p.m. and no Ca). The incidence of bitter pit at harvest was severe in the high-N treatment, and it increased significantly with decreasing Ca supply. A small amount of bitter pit was found in the low-N, no-Ca trees, but none occurred in the other low-N treatments.
