Residues of chlorinated hydrocarbon insecticides in some farm soils in England

Soil samples taken from 21 fields were examined for the presence of residues of chlorinated hydrocarbon insecticides. Aldrin was detected in only 4 out of 15 aldrin-treated fields and it does not appear to present a residue problem. Dieldrin was recovered from all fields in which aldrin had been used, and the amounts present ranged from about 0.01 to 0.41 ppm. Two out of 3 fields treated twice with aldrin contained dieldrin in excess of 0.2 ppm in the soil. Residues of DDT were found in 14 of the 21 fields with concentrations ranging from about 0.01 to 0.9 ppm, and indications that foliage sprays were responsible for some of the largest residues found. BHC seed dressing did not give rise to any appreciable residues in the fields though marked residues from crude BHC applied to a field in 1947 still persisted in amounts sufficient to taint potatoes in 1961.
