Selection for body weight at eight weeks of age. 1. Short term response and heritabilities

Selection for body weight at eight weeks of age. 1. Short term response and heritabilities

DOI: 10.3382/ps.0410954

An experiment was conducted to determine the response to individual phen-otypic selection in divergent directions for 8-week weight in White Plymouth Rock chickens. Comparisons of effective and expected selection differentials indicated that natural selection was a minor influence in determining the short term response to artificial selection. Additive genetic variation accounted for approximately 30% of the total variation whereas epistatic deviations appeared to be unimportant. The roles of sex-linked, maternal and dominance effects on the quantitative inheritance of the selected trait are discussed.
