Abstract
At the aridisol order level the soils fulfilled all the criteria laid down in the proposed USDA system of classifical. At the sub-order level, given examples of orthids and argids conformed to their definitions but a third sub-order, the aquids, is proposed to accommodate the large number of hydromorphic paddy soils occurring as prominent zonal associates with distinct characters and receiving different management practices.
