In growth chambers seedling emergence in clay loam decreased with increasing soil-moisture tension, but was unaffected by soil bulk density. Root penetration in the 8 days following planting increased with decreasing moisture tension and bulk density. Roots did not penetrate in a plot compacted to bulk density 1.25 g per cc at 2 atm soil-moisture tension, but they grew with the same bulk density at 1 atm moisture tension.
