Intact seeds of P. pensylvanicum (1) and P. persicaria (2) after-ripened most rapidly when submerged in water and held at 2 degrees C for 4-6 weeks; seeds of P. lapathifolium (3) after ripened slightly faster when submerged in 0.2% potassium nitrate and held at 2 degrees C than in water, but after 4 weeks pre-treatment there was no difference. Scarifying mechanically or with sulfuric acid reduced the pre-treatment time 50%. Light increased the germination of (3) but not of (2) or (1).
