Studies on the biological conditions for the fertilization of hazel nut varieties, with particular reference to ecological conditions.

Studies on the biological conditions for the fertilization of hazel nut varieties, with particular reference to ecological conditions.

Arch. Gartenb, 10: 573-608. bibl. 76

When temperatures in late winter were relatively high, protandry occurred, but in cooler conditions protogyny was general. In controlled conditions the critical temperature for the development of protandry was shown to be 9 degrees C. Pollen viability showed marked varietal and annual differences. In pollen tests wild hazel nut was not generally a good pollinator. The varieties Bandnuss, Hallesche Riesennuss and Webbs Preisnuss were good pollinators.
