In water cultures N source and P level did not affect the appearance of Ca-deficiency symptoms. Mg-deficiency symptoms tended to appear more readily with NO3-nitrogen. Low Ca at high Mg level produced a close ratio of reducing sugar to total N and seriously affected biting taste. At high Ca level decreasing Mg widened this ratio.
