Buriey tobacco seedlings were grown in water culture with low and high levels of P and with N supplied as NO3 or as NH4 (actually NH4 plus NO3 in the proportions 4 to 1). Plants supplied with NO3-N made much better growth than those supplied with NH4-N and in addition their N content declined earlier and faster and their carbohydrate content increased markedly in the final growth stages. The high P level resulted in an excellent crop of high quality.
