Studies on the carbohydrate metabolism of sheep. X. Further studies on hypoglycaemia and hyperketonaemia in undernourished pregnant ewes and in ewes with pregnancy toxaemia. XI. The role of the adrenals in ovine pregnancy toxaemia

Aust. J. agric. Res, 11: 346-363; 364-382

Moderate undernutrition of non-pregnant ewes had little effect on blood glucose and ketone levels. In undernourished pregnant ewes, hypoglycaemia and hyperketonaemia was common in late pregnancy. By varying the degree and rapidity of reduction of the ration fed to pregnant ewes it was possible to produce any degree of hypoglvcaemia down to blood glucose levels below 20 mg.%, and any degree of hyperketonaemia up to 30 mg.% before severe clinical signs of pregnancy toxaemia were observed.
