Studies on the industrial production of flavin-adenine dinucleotide. 1. Preparation of mycelium of Eremothecium ashbyii as a rawmaterial containing flavin-adenine dinucleotide

Basal media and culture conditions for optimum production of flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) in the mycelia of Eremothecium ashbyii were studied, including variations in sources of nitrogen and carbon, size of inoculum and time and initial pH of culture. Shaking increased the amount of FAD produced. The best yield, 194 mg per litre, was obtained with a medium containing glucose 1, peptone 1.5 and maize steep liquor 0.1% at initial pH 6.2, incubated for 72 h. Drying the mycelia caused loss of about 30 per cent., but the remaining FAD was stable for at least 6 months in dry preparations. Good yields were obtained in large-scale production under the same conditions as in the laboratory.
