In cultures with moderate N level (20 ppm), NH4- and NO3-N were equally effective for N uptake and grain yield but straw yield was higher with NH4-N. With high N supply (100 ppm) NO3-N was superior to NH4-N which restricted root growth and affected N metabolism in the leaf tissue resulting in a greater accumulation of soluble N to protein N.
