The symptoms of a new disease of S. italica in N. China, studied by the Academia Sinica, Peking, are a reddening of the leaf blade, leaf sheath, and spike on the purple-stem varieties, and on green-stem varieties yellowing of the leaf blade. The discoloration is usually accompanied by general stunting and malformation.
