Abstract
Volcanic-ash soil of andesitic origin supplied nutrients in the order: K <P <N <Ca. Supplies of soil K decreased rapidly during cultivation. Upland rice and sweet potato as summer crops were least responsive to fertilizers. Responses of soyabeans and millet were negligible to N, marked to K and moderate to P and Ga. Wheat, buckwheat and rape as winter crops showed higher response to fertilizers than summer crops did.
