The best method of reverting from lucerne pasture to a cultivation phase in marginal wheat areas

The best method of reverting from lucerne pasture to a cultivation phase in marginal wheat areas

Agric Gaz New South Wales 71(4): 202-203, 205

A 5-year experiment was conducted at the Condobolin Experiment Farm to determine the best way to return a lucerne pasture to wheat cropping. Three methods were tried: (1) lucerne plowed in August and ground fallowed in preparation for sowing wheat; (2) long fallow after lucerne followed by wheat crop for hay; (3) oats following grazed lucerne, the oats grazed till spring, then plowed for seeding to wheat the next year. Each rotation was repeated 3 times. Results indicated that a long fallow during which the moisture content of the soil could be built up after the lucerne, then plowing in August and seeding to wheat gave the best crops of grain.
