The biting taste of Burley tobacco leaves (nutrition of Japanese tobacco). 2. Effect of soil and fertilizing on taste with special reference to phosphate

In pot experiments with tobacco, growth and yields were high on alluvial soil of pH 6.0 rich in available P; the N content of leaves was low, and the biting taste was weak. On volcanic ash and tertiary allitic soils of pH 5.4-5.5, low in available P, yields were lower, leaf-N contents higher and the biting taste stronger, than on the alluvial soil. On volcanic ash, maturity was delayed considerably, probably because of the low soil-P content.
