In this preliminary study, dormant grains of the spring barley Rika were treated with either gamma rays, thermal neutrons or one of twelve organic compounds thought to have a mutagenic effect. Experiments with the chemicals were of two kinds; in one method the grains were treated for three days at 3 degrees C. and in the other for 24 hr. at 24 degrees C. Under these two sets of conditions equal quantities of liquid were absorbed.
