Between 1950 and 1959 numbers of sheep in the 5 mainland states of Australia increased from 110 to 149 million and of cattle from 8.5 to 10.1 million. Improved pasture increased from 17.3 to 31.4 million acres. This study is an attempt to show how far the increase in livestock is related directly to pasture improvement and it is concluded that in Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales improved pasture is responsible for only 46% of the increase in stock numbers.
