Trials with 525 calves showed that the nutritive value of milk was adversely affected (as regards mortality rate, scouring, growth rate and digestibility of N) and considerable denaturation of non-casein protein occurred on severe heat-treatment (74 degrees C for 30 min. before spray-drying, 135 degrees C for 1-3 sec. and roller-drying at 110 degrees C) but not on mild heat-treatment (77 degrees C for 15 sec. before spray-drying and 63 degrees C for 30 min.).
